Heating oil is produced by refining crude oil or petroleum. Of the heating oil that is used worldwide the majority of it is used by residences. Even though natural gas is becoming one of the most commonly used fuels to heat the home, heating oil still remains very popular with many people.
Just like natural gas, the prices of heating oil depend on supply and demand. The cost of your heating oil is also largely dependent on the trends in global crude oil. If there is more crude oil available than the demand for it, the price of crude oil and of heating oil will fall. This is often seen during the summer when supply of oil is usually high due to decreased demand. However if there is a shortage of crude oil the prices will rise. The prices will also rise as the demand for crude oil products such as heating oil increase, as they do during the colder winter months.
There are also other factors which can affect the price of heating oil. Sometimes prices are increased independently by a heating oil supplier and this makes many of their customers leave for a different supplier. If the company then loses too many customers they will have to drop their prices so existing customers will see a decrease in the amount they pay for heating oil.
Not only do the colder winter months bring higher demand for heating oil and an increase in prices accordingly, but harsh winter conditions can affect the supply routes of the oil. Prices can rise drastically if the routes are affected in any way. Plus getting oil to more rural homes can be quite expensive and this must be factored into the overall price for heating oil. If you can get your oil prices fixed however, you may find that you are better off in the long run.
Some people spend a lot of money heating their homes in the winter. Electricity and gas prices are very high and show no signs of coming down any time soon. Many individuals are now changing over to cheaper home heating oil though. And when this happens they have to ensure the tanks re always full of cheapest heating oil to ensure they never run out.
