How Investors Make Money From Stocks

Basically there are 3 ways which you can make money off of stocks. These are through appreciation, dividends and option trading. Each of these is a little different and all of them look for different criteria.

1. Appreciation

The first way people profit in the stock market is through appreciation. So for example if an investor buys a stock at $20 and sells it at $28 they have made money. This is the simplest way of making a profit from the stock market, and it can be very profitable if you are able to consistently pick stocks that go up faster than the market on average.

To do this it does take some time. You should learn the stock basics which can help you to pick the best investments out there. If you can then it is an extremely powerful way to make money in the stock market.

2. Dividends

Some companies will actually offer you dividend stocks which will pay you a percentage of their earnings month after month, or quarter after quarter depending on the stock.

One of the easiest ways of making money in the stock market is to simply grab a list of dividend paying stocks and get into ones that are both stable and pay out a large dividend. You do not need the stock to go up with this strategy, but it would not hurt you to still check out the companies fundamentals.

If you have enough money this could be an easy way to get some livable income from the stock market.

3. Option Trading

Stock option trading can definately be extremely profitable if you do it right. In fact a 10% move in the stock may be a 200% move in the option, but it does come with some higher risk as well. When you buy an option you are buying the right to buy the stock at a specific price on or before a specific date.

This allows you to profit from a stock’s move with only having to put up a fraction of the money. However if the stock does not move in the way you want it to that option can expire worthless and could mean you lose all of your invested money.
