Gas and oil are two of the more popular methods of heating the home. Millions of homes worldwide use heating oil to warm their homes. The main source of heating oil is crude oil but these days biofuels are actually used too. Petroleum heating oil comes in three main types which are diesel, kerosene and a blend of distillate fuel and residual fuel. Kerosene is the most pure form of heating oil but is also the most expensive. Diesel has more impurities than kerosene but is more affordable and is the choice for most homes.
The global cost of crude oil is constantly changing and this directly affects the price of heating oil. However, there are other factors which affect the price of heating oil. For example, if the weather suddenly turns very cold, there is normally a sudden high demand for oil which can send the prices higher. But those who are clever will normally make sure that they take advantage of lower prices during the summer months and fill their tanks up then ready for the winter. That way the high winter prices can be avoided for a while at least. But installing more than one tank in your home could mean that you could fill up totally in the summer and probably get away with paying these high winter prices altogether.
Natural gas is another fuel that is used as an alternative to heating oil. The main benefit of natural gas is that is directly pumped into people’s homes. You do not have to contact your heating company to get it delivered as you do with oil. But because gas prices have been increasing all the time, many people are reluctant to move away from oil as a form of heating. Natural gas is also not available everywhere and many homes in rural areas need oil to heat their homes.
Some people spend a lot of money heating their homes in the winter. Electricity and gas prices are very high and show no signs of coming down any time soon. Many individuals are now changing over to cheaper home heating oil though. And when this happens they have to ensure the tanks re always full of heating oil to ensure they never run out.
